British sheep farmers have been having a difficult time in recent years. Wool went out of fashion as a clothing material with the development of cheaper synthetic fabrics after the Second World War. Since the 1970s duvets have replaced blankets on our beds, so that it is now difficult, if not impossible, to buy pure wool blankets.

Naturewarm Ltd, based in Lincolnshire, is playing its part in reversing this trend by adapting wool to modern bedding preferences, and is a licensee of the British Wool Marketing Board. Naturewarm has been manufacturing wool pillows, duvets and bedtoppers filled with beautiful British wool, since 2005. Wool comes from a sustainable, renewable source and uses significantly less oil in production than synthetic materials do. The use of British wool rather than other fillings for bedding can help us all to reduce our carbon footprint and to keep British sheep farmers in business.

Apart from its green credentials, wool is a very good product to use in bedding because it creates a microclimate which adapts to the fluctuating temperature of the sleeper. It is ideal for couples whose body temperatures differ widely. A steady, comfortable temperature promotes a lower heart rate, resulting in deeper, more restful sleep.

Many allergy sufferers find wool an ideal bedding material. Its manufacturing process includes scouring of the wool and treatment for shrink resistance: both of these processes remove the protein which attracts dust mites.

I am so pleased I followed your advice and put a bedtopper on my bed this winter. As you know, I had been using a wool duvet for a couple of years without needing a “top-up”, but the really cold weather this winter was quite a challenge. I wasn’t expecting the difference the bedtopper has made: the warmth of the topper combined with the duvet has made my bed very cosy, and I don’t need an extra cover or comforter.
